Important Notice - Please Read Before Registering
  • Registration is only open for individuals who are fully vaccinated1.

1Individuals are considered fully vaccinated if they meet one of the following criteria:

– Two weeks after receiving the 2nd dose of Pfizer, Moderna, or WHO’s Emergency Use Listing vaccines such as Sinovac, Sinopharm, and AstraZeneca.

– Have recovered from Covid-19 within the past 270 days.

– Have a valid negative pre-event test (PET) result taken in the past 24 hours before the expected end of the activity.

*Documentary proof for verification will be required to enter and remain within the premises.

• Participants who have been issued with QO (Quarantine Order), HQO (Home Quarantine Order), or SHN (Stay Home Notice) in the past 14 days or currently displaying ARI (Acute Respiratory Infection) symptoms are required to inform our staff and to produce a negative ART test result on the same day of the class before participating.

• The default mode of instruction will be in-person learning at the monastery. However, remote e-learning via pre-recorded lectures may be adopted due to the ever-changing Covid-19 situation (e.g., tightening of measures by the government). Interested participants are strongly advised to evaluate their own abilities to switch and adapt between different learning modes before registering.

• 2022 Buddhism Lecture Series consists of 5 discrete modules with an increasing level of difficulty (with Module 1 being the most elementary and Module 5 the most advanced) Interested participants are encouraged to register for the module(s) that are most appropriate for their current level of Buddhism knowledge.

• Interested participants can sign up for any number of modules. In order to maximise learning outcomes, participants are advised to assess their own commitment levels before registering for the module(s).

• Modules offered have different registration periods. Interested participants must apply for their module(s) of interest according to the stipulated registration periods. Special requests for advanced registrations will not be entertained.

• All classes are strictly non-refundable and non-transferable upon successful registration.

• In view of the ever-changing Covid-19 situation, free dinner and shuttle bus services will not be provided for the entire duration of the 2022 Buddhism Lecture Series. Participants are also advised to prepare their own drinking water.

• All participants must wear a mask and adhere strictly to the monastery’s safe distancing measures at all times.

• All participants (males and females alike) must be dressed appropriately with covered shoulders and knees when attending classes at the monastery.

Module 1: Discovering Buddhism (For Beginners)

Synopsis: This module serves as an introduction to Buddhism for newcomers. Students will learn about The Triple Gem, the dos and don’ts of Buddhists, and the basic teachings of Buddha on the realities of life.

Module 2: Sutra on the Eight Realisations of Great Beings

Date: 29 Aug to 14 Nov 2022 (Every Monday)

Synopsis: The Sutra on the Eight Realisations of Great Beings offers us essential subjects for mindful contemplation, with the intention that we apply the transformational insights gained to our daily lives. The teachings provide an ideal starting point for those interested in Buddhism, and serve as moral guidelines for Buddhists who are committed to practice.

Module 3: Extra-Ordinary Happiness (Sigālovāda Sutta & Dīghajāṇu Sutta)

Date: 22 Feb to 10 May 2022 (Every Tuesday)

Synopsis: Daily life may appear stressful and challenging, especially in the midst of a global pandemic. Oftentimes the stressors and troubles are self-inflicted due to our ignorance. In pursuit of our Happiness, we turn to material comforts and sensual experiences that provide only fleeting Ordinary Happiness. Come and explore the timeless advice and instructions provided by the Buddha to lead a life that would provide the basis for Extra-ordinary Happiness in this life and beyond. In this module, we will delve into the wisdom found in two Suttas. The first is Sigālovāda Sutta, which highlights the activities that we should engage in and avoid in order to live a purposeful and joyful life, while fulfilling our responsibilities and relating harmoniously with everyone. We will also study the Dīghajāṇu Sutta, where the Buddha expounds on how we can train ourselves, to improve our welfare and Happiness and to lead our lives with compassion and wisdom, bringing benefits in this life and future lives.

Module 4: Happiness Through Blessings (Maṅgala Sutta)

Date: 24 May to 26 Jul 2022 (Every Tuesday)

Synopsis: Everyone seeks Happiness. However, not everyone knows how to create the conditions that are necessary for Happiness to arise. Out of great compassion, the Buddha had provided guidance on the actions we can take to progress on the spiritual path, leading to greater well-being and Happiness. In this module, we will explore in detail the instructions given by the Buddha in the Maṅgala Sutta, that would lead us to life’s greatest blessings! Join us in this illuminating study, as Venerable explains how we may best apply the Buddha’s instructions in our contemporary lives.

Module 5: Ultimate Happiness (Satipaṭṭhāna Sutta)

Date: 30 Aug to 8 Nov 2022 (Every Tuesday)
Time: 7.30pm to 9.00pm

Synopsis: Purification of the mind is essential if we are determined to seek the taste of ultimate bliss through our own awakening, and to be free from all sufferings. This can only be realised through our effort to develop the mind, step by step. In this module, the Venerable will address the obstacles that would arise in one’s practice and how to overcome them and guide us through the Four Foundations of Mindfulness as taught in the Satipaṭṭhāna Sutta. We will take an experiential approach to study the Sutta and will learn the methods to develop concentration and wisdom, which will lead the way to achieve the highest and ultimate Happiness.
