Ajahn Vajiro was born in Malaysia in 1953. His monastic journey began in 1977 when he met Ven. Ajahn Chah and Ven. Ajahn Sumedho at the Hampstead Vihara. The following year, he joined the Buddhist community in London. In 1979, he travelled to Wat Pah Nannachat, and in 1980, he received upasampadā (full ordination), from Ven. Ajahn Chah at Wat Pah Pong.
In 1984, Ajahn Vajiro returned to England, where he played a key role in establishing Amaravati Buddhist Monastery. After spending many years in monasteries across the UK, he continued his monastic journey practice in New Zealand and later in Australia, before returning to Amaravati in 2001.
In 2010, he was invited to Portugal to help establish Sumedhārāma, a monastery rooted in the Forest Tradition. Since the beginning of Vassa in July 2012, he has resided in Portugal, serving as the abbot of Sumedhārāma.
