Refuge is the basis of the Buddhadharma, generating a pure motivation is the basis of practice, right view is the basis of liberation, and ethical discipline is the basis of the Sangha community. Among these important bases, refuge is the most important. Missing out on this foundation is like having a seed separated from soil; none of the Dharma practices will be able to take root.
