Short-term Novitiate Retreat FAQ

1. Are both male and female participants allowed in the Retreat?

Yes, both male and female participants are welcome to join the retreat. However, the experiences differ slightly. Male participants will embark on a short-term monastic retreat, living in the monastery and adhering to the monastic code (Vinaya) under the guidance of experienced monks. This includes shaving their heads, wearing monastic robes, receiving a Dharma name (法名), and fully immersing themselves in the monastic lifestyle. Female participants will observe the Eight Precepts, which emphasise disciplined and mindful living. Both paths offer valuable opportunities for personal growth and spiritual development.

2. What is the age requirement to participate?

The Retreat is open to male and female participants aged 16 to 60. For those under 16, you may complete the application form and receive written consent from your parents before submitting it to us for consideration.

3. How can I register for the Retreat?

Applicants are required to undergo a pre-interview to assess their readiness and commitment to the Short-Term Novitiate Retreat. Upon successful completion of the interview, shortlisted applicants will be required to pay a registration fee of $150 and attend a mandatory preparatory class on 1 March 2025 (9am to 3pm).

The fee ensures that the monastery provides a conducive environment where all participants receive the necessary support and resources to fully immerse themselves in the monastic lifestyle for the duration of the Retreat.

6. Why is the Retreat registration fee non-refundable?

The Retreat registration fee is non-refundable to ensure that only applicants who are fully committed to participating in the retreat proceed after the interview. The monastery also prepares resources and logistics in advance for each participant, which incurs costs regardless of whether the participant completes the Retreat. Therefore, to cover these preparations, the registration fee is non-refundable once paid.
